Stocking The Thanksgiving Larder With 6,000 Pounds of Gravy

Planning to pick up some cranberries and whipping cream this weekend? You and everybody else. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, cooks everywhere are stocking the larder, but those preparations are small potatoes compared to the breathtaking annual efforts Whole Foods mounts during this, their hands-down busiest week of the year. At city stores, customer traffic is up 40% through T-Day morning as New Yorkers knock each other over to get to the brown sugar. The supermarket’s strategies include cooking up takeout aplenty –they sell a whopping 6,000 gallons of gravy alone—and getting all hands on deck—witness senior execs directing shoppers to parchment paper and even bagging groceries. Dear Whole Foods: we’re thankful!
