Broomcorn Along the Gowanus and Other Arty Ideas at a $20 Party this Weekend

Christine Kelly's first project was a little corny, but we approve.

Last fall Edible Brooklyn profiled Christina Kelly, an artist who filled planters on city streets with heirloom corn in attempt to highlight the long-lost maize crops of our Lenape indian forbears. This weekend, as part of an ongoing project called Feast, Kelly will take place in a contest among 10 local artists to get the greenlight (meaning a few funds) to go ahead with their Brooklyn-based projects. Kelly’s is to plant broomcorn along the Gowanus canal — she’s calling it SWEEP — others want to repurpose trash into sculture in Brooklyn schools, one entrant wants to make a giant air-fueled organ, another a one-day “musical petting zoo” where you can play instruments as you wish. The winner is decided by those who attend the “Feast” of from 5 to 8 on Saturday at Church of the Messiah in Greenpoint. There will be food and Brooklyn Brewery beer, but entry is first-come, first-served and the suggested donation is $20. More details right here.
