Along with Salamis Sent to Boys in the Army, There Were Victory Gardens

An Upper East Side Victory Gardenette circa WWII

As we give a nod to all all the men and women who have served in the military on Veterans Day, we’re reminded about the piece Melanie Bower of the City Museum of New York did this fall on vegetables grown in their honor, at least during the second World War. When most of our surplus food was shipped overseas to servicemen and women, Gothamites, like the rest of the country’s citizens, were urged to plant Victory Gardens. Supposedly there were 400,000 in the city at one time. Victory Gardens are long gone, but the spirit to try and grow what you can close to home, we’re happy to report, is alive and well this Veterans Day.
