While bartender contests are usually not our scene (don’t you HATE it when you get a recipe that calls for three things you’ve never even heard of, let alone have in your pantry?), there was one drink at the Don Julio Tequila cocktail competition at Good Spirits we tried that we absolutely have to, and can easily, make at home.
When Eleanor and Albert Leger left behind careers in software and teaching chemistry, respectively, they bought a farm in Vermont and discovered something special: the apples of the North Country.
The Forrest Gump cocktail from Nick and Toni’s Cafe features Brooklyn’s own Cacao Prieto Cacao Rum, which we wrote about here in Edible Brooklyn. It goes down easy with some Valentine’s chocolate, just saying…

Yes, it’s November, but February will be here faster than you can say, “Give me a hot toddy,” and that means one thing: Good Spirits, our annual cocktail pairing event, is coming soon.
It was one for the cocktail pairing record books at this year’s Good Spirits! A sold-out crowd of 500 flocked to 82 Mercer to eat, drink and mingle. With food and drink from more than 50 of the city’s most celebrated food and drink makers, guests had plenty to sample.

There’s something about Tuesday that’s maybe a bit blah. It’s not quite Monday, but it’s definitely not Friday. In case you’ve lost count, there is a grand total of 20 days left until what has been called the best cocktail event in New York City. Good Spirits is our seasonal cocktail pairing party and all bias aside, this year’s line-up of participants is top-notch. It’s all going down downstairs at 82 Mercer in SoHo on February 28th.
Predicting the weather is Punxsutawney Phil’s domain. Predicting what’s going to happen when it comes to food, farm policy and politics? That’s where the NYC Food Almanac 2012 comes in. On January 24th from 6:30 to 9 pm at 632Below, a group of experts (including Edible’s own Brian Halweil) will predict what will happen and call for what should happen with a panel discussion and Q&A.
As February approaches, we’re getting more and more excited about this year’s first edition of Good Spirits, our seasonal cocktail event held at 82 Mercer on February 28. (Which just happens to be the birthday of our events director Sam Seier, so when she runs past you to make sure there are napkins at The Beagle table and ice for the guys making drinks with El Buho Mezcal, please wish her a good one.) We can’t wait to see what places like The Beagle or Monument Lane and Fort Reno will feed us, or what “good spirits” we’re going to drink made from El Buho, Privateer Rum or Bache Gabrielsen. It’ll all be great, for sure, so headed over here to purchase your $45 ticket to join us (and wish Sam a happy birthday).
