Print is Alive and Well (We Just Ate There)

Print's simple-but-spectacular salad starring blood oranges, almonds, dates and red watercress.

Being editor of a paper magazine, I love evidence that print is alive and well. Last night I dined at Print, a gorgeous year-old restaurant in a Hells Kitchen hotel that is both vivacious and delicious.

Owner Adam Block spends half his time on the left coast—he’s worked with the likes of Alice Waters and Judy Rodgers for decades—but he’s no stranger to New York restaurants either; Gotham projects include Country and even Per Se. Farm-forward sensibilities shine at Print where even this late in winter, the in-house forager Johanna Kolodony sources New York’s finest—including short ribs from Grazin’ Angus Acres, one of the few regulars on an ever-changing menu – but even turnips and beets feel fresh in the hands of chef Charles Rodriguez. Indeed I forgot all about my anticipation of asparagus and rhubarb. My favorite plate of the night—and, I think, of the year so far—was a simple-but-spectacular salad that starred blood orange, with almonds, dates, and a red watercress that I could have eaten by the pitchfork. Bring on the internet revolution—just don’t rush spring.
