Our former photo editor Michael Harlan Turkell spent the past year photographing rustic Italian dishes with the wonderfully talented Sara Jenkins, chef/owner of both Porchetta and Porsena restaurants in NYC. The result is a gorgeous app for iPad packed with recipes for simple, delicious food that’s easy to make based on 16 basic pantry items, plus loads of beautiful photography (why are we not surprised?).

The James Beard Foundation has just announced the semi-finalists for its 2012 food journalism awards and we’re thrilled to announce that our former photo editor Michael Harlan Turkell has been nominated for the Visual Storytelling category for three restaurant profiles that appeared in this magazine.
There’s so much we didn’t get to tell you during this week’s NY1 segment on Clinton Street Baking Co.’s February Pancake Month. We were so busy telling you the genesis of chef Neil Kleinberg’s superior whipped egg white pancake recipe, that we didn’t get to talk about the toppings, which change every few days until the 29th, or their cookbook, which was named one of the best of the year by the Times last year and was shot by none other than our former photo editor, the talented Michael Harlan Turkell.
