4 Pre-Broadway Brunch Spots to Fill You Up Before a Weekend Matinee

It’s the weekend. You’re in the Theater District for a Broadway matinee and in desperate need of sustenance. This may be news to you, but finding a good meal in midtown is kind of difficult. But if you’re willing to look, you’ll find spaces catering to locals and tourists alike. Here are four places for every taste, budget and time frame. Don’t go to the theatre hungry.

For a “Grab and Go” Brunch: Amy’s Bread
672 9th Ave.
Amy’s Bread, located on 47th Street and 9th Avenue, has been a Hell’s Kitchen staple since 1992 and now has multiple storefronts across the city. Pastries are crafted with fresh ingredients and it shows in every bite. Stop in for freshly baked pistachio croissant twists, a latte or homemade hot chocolate to wash it down with, and be ready to walk to the rush line to buy those inexpensive tickets before the box office opens. The hourlong, sometimes longer, wait is always more bearable once you bite into those layers of pastry and butter.

For a Fancier Brunch: Brasserie 8 ½
9 W. 57th St.
Sunday brunch at Brasserie 8 ½ is pricey and outside the Theater District, but it’s worth it. At $34 per person, Brasserie 8 ½’s buffet-style brunch includes ceviche, truffle polenta, seafood paella, tofu omelettes and crêpes Suzette along with the standard brunch fare. Service starts at 11 a.m., so I recommend making a reservation for the earlier slots and indulging on the unlimited mimosas for $14 more. Afterward, you can walk it off to the in time for your curtain call.

For a Pocket-Friendly Brunch: Mother Burger
329 W. 49th St.
This brunch spot sits at Worldwide Plaza and offers outdoor seating, with the meal going for a steal. I’m currently craving the Frosted Flakes French Toast, which is enough to feed two people. All entrées are $12 and include coffee or soda. If you’re in the market for an alcoholic beverage, mimosas and margaritas are just $3.

For When You Can’t Decide Between Brunch and Lunch: Rustic Table
504 W. 42nd St.
A fast-casual brunch and lunch destination, Rustic Table offers brunch classics with a Mediterranean flair every day starting at 7:30 a.m. The restaurant has limited seating but makes up for it in flavor. Order a matcha latte, mint lemonade or granita to start off. If you’re not sold on the Nutella Classica (a croissant filled with peanut butter, Nutella and banana slices), try the Sweet and Tart Sandwich with goat cheese, honey dressing and arugula or the brisket sandwich. Don’t forget to ask for a side of Kalamata olive butter!
