If you’re actually looking for the gift that keeps on giving this holiday, subscription boxes like those from Farm to People or Mouth might be it. One of the newest to join the ever-growing New York scene is Small Batcherya seasonal and curated subscription box that promotes small businesses by stocking locally made goods.

Small Batchery is the latest project from the Miles.City team, a civic start-up that locates space for independent businesses to host short-term storefronts, pop-up dinners and more.

“We are passionate and supportive about small businesses because we believe in cultivating the potential of people, of their craft, creativity and authenticity through their products,” Miles.City founder Eric Ho says. “Of course, not all big corporations are bad and not all small businesses are good, it’s a gross generalization, but we have observed that small businesses usually produce products with more care, attention and personality, and hence, our support for them.”

The boxes are sent out four times a year with each season. Subscription prices vary from $40-$120 depending on the number of seasons a consumer opts to receive, while individual boxes are available for purchase with prices ranging from $30-$45. The four winter boxes on sale now include items like salted caramel sauce Ardent Homesteader Cara-sel, Highland Farm venison jerky, The Hudson Standard apple coriander maple shrub and Rockerbox Spice Co. garlic dust powder.

Ho’s intent is to expand Small Batchery to other large metropolitan centers like Boston, Philadelphia and Washington D.C.

“We are aiming for consumers who are conscious about shopping local… to also extend their support to these small-batch products.” Ho says.

Small Batchery will be hosting a pop-up shop in collaboration with Westfield Corporation in Downtown Manhattan’s Fulton Center from November 25—December 23.
