Year of the Farmer

Move over, firefighters. The people who feed us are New York’s new hometown heroes, and they’re gracing the pages of two beautiful 2009 calendars, both of which venerate the Hudson Valley farmers who make our daily bread.

Top caterer Great Performances—which gets some ingredients from its very own Katchkie Farm upstate—has produced Down to Earth 2009, below, a hot-off-the-presses calendar that celebrates earthly delights with men of the land we wouldn’t mind looking at every day. Profits fund an educational partnership between the Greenmarket and Great Performances’ new not-for-profit, the Sylvia Center, joining forces to provide city children with interactive experiences on farms, in markets and in kitchens (

Another farm-centric 2009 fund-raiser calendar, Honoring the Hands, above, raises money to keep field-workers as healthy as the broccoli they tend. All sales benefit Hudson River HealthCare, whose 14 centers provide health services for migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families. The calendar features gorgeous photos of 12 of the Valley’s culinary celebrities—from chefs like Dan Barber to farmers like Keith Stewart—standing up for the unsung families who put food on our tables day after day after day ( ).
