Transforming the food system has great potential to reduce the carbon emissions that cause global warming, expand well-paid, clean energy jobs and reverse the twin public health crises of food insecurity and diet-related diseases. Additionally, adding an explicit focus on food in Green New Deal debates and agendas at the city, state, and federal level can engage wider, more diverse constituencies in persuading cautious politicians to overcome opposition from industries that oppose modifying the status quo. As New York City and State are both taking steps toward the development and implementation of ambitious Green New Deal plans, this forum will explore why Putting Food on the Green New Deal Menu matters and what decision makers can do to bring this transformative perspective to their climate action policies and initiatives.
