Fish and fishing are iconic parts of New York’s culinary, political, cultural and economic histories. However, this $210 million industry has been running against the current in the past two years. We are still feeling the effects of Hurricane Sandy in many of our communities, but New York’s waterfronts — in the city and outside it — were particularly devastated when the storm hit in October 2012, threatening local fishermen and local waters. What steps are already being taken towards more sustainable local waterfronts, and what have Sandy and her lasting effects taught us, as fish-eaters and island-dwellers?
