Eat for a Good Cause: Hurricane Sandy Relief Dinners, Benefits and More

These events get the Edible stamp of approval!
One week since Hurricane Sandy flooded homes, took lives, washed away boardwalks and knocked down countless trees, we couldn’t be prouder of our fellow New Yorkers.  Everywhere we look it seems people are pitching in–helping neighbors throw out damaged furniture and scour their floors, donating clothes and homemade meals, or fundraising to buy the newly homeless undies and blankets.  If you’re looking for more ways to help our neighbors in need, here are some worthy (and delicious) options:

Today

Lonestar Taco will be handing out free tacos at Gerritsen Beach (52 Seba Avenue) from 12pm-3pm

“Eat Pork, Help New York” Fundraiser at Seersucker (all proceeds go to the Red Hook Initiative)- 6:30pm

Telepan Hurricane Sandy Relief Dinner (all proceeds go to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City) – 7pm

Shake Shack Introduces New “Rally Shake”–inspired by a black and white cookie ($2 will go to the Red Cross for every Rally Shake sold) – today through Sunday

NYC FoodFlood Dinner at Aldea – $300, 5-courses prepared by George Mendes, Marco Canora, Seamus Mullen and Andrew Carmellini.  (all proceeds will benefit local communities in need)  On 11/8, these chefs will prepare hot food and deliver it to the outer-borough neighborhoods hard hit by the storm.

Thursday, November 8th
Cocktail Bodega Fundraiser for Food Bank NYC  – music by DJ Equal, raffle for prizes

Places to drop off donations:

Cubana Social – ongoing
Joining forces with the Hester Street Collaborative to help the elderly and disabled in Chinatown and the LES, Cubana Social serves as a drop-off point for donations (food, water, batteries, flashlights, generators).  Additionally, a portion of sales and tips will be donated to Sandy relief.

Marlow & Sons – ongoing
Upstairs from Marlow & Sons, they are collecting donations and are looking for drivers to head out to the Rockaways.   They’re specifically looking for ready-to-eat food that can be easily distributed (sandwiches, granola bars, etc.) and toilet paper, diapers, water, batteries, candles, etc.
