Eat Drink Local Profile #16: Mas (farmhouse)

The Restaurant:

Mas

What They Do:

This Greenwich Village spot–whose name translates to ‘farmhouse’– dishes up French-inspired, New American fare in the tradition of real farmhouse cooking, using what is in season and grown nearby–including flowers from chef Galen Zamarra’s yard.  The plates are elegant, yet simple, always striving to respect the freshness and integrity of the ingredients within.

Why We Love Them:

Chef Zamarra (that’s him above right) works his magic in an unbelievably tiny kitchen at Mas, sending out beautiful plates that highlight the ingredients he carefully sources from farms near the city.  He seeks out local ingredients, not just because they are better, but because he really believes in supporting local producers.  Read more about Galen and his passion for sustainable, seasonal food (as well as how good his cooking is) in this profile on Mas we wrote last year.

Where to Find Them:

Mas is tucked into the West Village at 39 Downing Street, between Bedford and Varick Streets.  The menu changes daily and reservations are strongly recommended.  Click here for the restaurant’s website.

From September 26th to October 6th Edible Manhattan, Edible East End and Edible Brooklyn — in conjunction with Edibles statewide and GrowNYC — present Eat Drink Local week, our celebration of the local food chain through heirloom vegetable auctions, wine tastings, DIY challenges, lectures, garden tours, farm to table dinners and countless other events. Over the next few weeks we’re highlighting a few of the restaurants, wine shops and wineries, breweries and beer bars, farms and food artisans and cultural institutions that the week is meant to celebrate.
