Murray’s Cheese

One of the few cheese stores in New York to have their own cheese caves, Murray’s sets the standard in their field. It’s had ample time to get there—it was founded in the 1940s by Murray Greenberg, at the current Greenwich Village store. In addition to the cornucopia of domestic and imported cheeses available there, there’s also an impressive collection of salumi, and cheese tray co-stars like olives, nuts, dried fruits. If you want to brush up on your cheese knowledge, they also offer classes. The Grand Central location is admittedly much smaller than the flagship, but still has a good variety of cheese styles—pick some up before you get on the train.
