For former sculptor Jim Lahey it took a trip to Italy to realize that America needed better bread. His Hell’s Kitchen bakery offers rustic Italian classics, like pane casareccio (a country sourdough) and pane alle olive (a round loaf with bits of green olive), as well as other hearty breads like the multigrain pullman loaf, which makes great sandwich slices. But Sullivan’s tackles more than bread. There are panini and pizzas--like the pizza zucchini, a thin crust topped with zucchini, gruyere and bread crumbs—as well as first-rate sweets. Try the bomboloni, Sullivan’s signature doughnut, filled with seasonal jam or pastry cream. --Amber Benham
