“Blown Away” — The Vermont Sail Freight Project

[nggallery template=carouselag id=31]

If you’ve read our current issue, you already know how excited we’ve been about the Vermont Sail Freight Project, through which Erik Andrus is bringing Vermont ingredients to Manhattan using only wind, water and a barge he built by hand. They’re finally about to dock in the city with help from the Greenhorns.

I was lucky enough to catch the Ceres (the boat is aptly named for the goddess of grain) up in the town of Hudson earlier on its voyage, which is where I took these pictures. Something just felt right about buying the kinds of ingredients I believe in—apples from small orchards, birch syrup and heirloom grains—off of a sailboat rather than a diesel truck.  The Hudson River, spectacular and sparkling behind the stand, seemed to agree.

Experience it yourself—Ceres will be docked and selling food (plus beautiful inedibles like T-shirts and goose wings) at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Saturday and at the New Amsterdam Market on Sunday.
