PERFORMANCES, OYSTERS, STRAWBERRY DISHES & KIDS ZONE, AT THE SHINNECOCK MUSEUM STRAWBERRY HARVEST FESTIVAL, JUNE 18
Join a celebration of local Native American culture and heritage, and enjoy traditional summer foods at the Strawberry Harvest Festival. A highlight at this year’s festival will be traditional dance and canoe making demonstrations that allow guests of all ages to learn, participate and have fun. The Festival will be held at the Shinnecock Museum, Saturday, June 18, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a free outdoor event. Entry to the Museum is $5 for adults, $3 for children 5 – 12 and free for children under 5.
Other weekend attractions will include an Arts and Crafts Bazaar and “Taste of Shinnecock” Food Sale. Featured in the Bazaar is an array of Shinnecock and Native American-made jewelry, art, clothing, beadwork and other hand-crafted traditional and contemporary pieces. This is a rare opportunity for buyers, collectors, and the general public to meet and purchase directly from these talented artists.
Plump, succulent, Shinnecock oysters will be served at the “Taste of Shinnecock” food sale. Fresh from the private shorelines of the ancestral Shinnecock Indian Reservation, the oysters are grown and hand-tended in the waters of Shinnecock Bay, giving them a unique sweet and briny flavor. Other tasting delights include Indian tacos, fry bread, corn on the cob and Shinnecock strawberry shortcake, all for sale from $3 to $10.
On view at the Museum are, “A Walk with the People,” murals and collections depicting the history of the Shinnecock; “My Spirit Dances Forever,” The Frederick DeMatteis Collection of bronze sculptures; and “People of the Shore” panel exhibit that examines the enduring connection of the Indians of Eastern Long Island with the sea. The Museum is the only Native American-owned and operated Museum on Long Island. It is handicapped accessible and open to the public – located on Montauk Highway (Route 27A) and West Gate Road in Southampton. Contact us at (631) 287-4923 or www.shinnecockculturalcenter.org. Hours of operation are Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday 12 to 4 p.m.
