America’s Oldest Winery at the Greenmarket Today and Tomorrow (Yep, They’re Local)

Ye Olde Wine Barrels

Speaking of winemakers, did you know that this country’s oldest continually operated winery is just 60 miles north of the city? (Actually readers of Edible Brooklyn might: It was covered it back in the fall of 2007 in a story on the Hudson Valley wine region.)

It’s called Brotherhood Winery, established complete with castle-like underground wine caves in 1839 in the Orange County town of Washingtonville.

And the history of the Hudson River Valley as a winemaking region — there’s a even a Shawangunk Wine Trail! — goes back further, with the first wine grapes planted by French Huguenots in the late 16oos. The vintners behind Brotherhood will be on hand to sell their wines today at Union Square Greenmarket and tomorrow at Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket in Brooklyn. Meet the makers! Taste some history!
