Was it just yesterday it was 72 degrees and so sunny we needed SPF 30? Luckily our intrepid photo editor, Rebecca McAlpin, had an outdoor assignment. Working on our next issue–Eat, Drink, Local-themed–she tracked Daniel Bowman Simon to the greenmarket to buy seedlings and then to a community garden where they were planted in raised beds.

Last Call–The “Art Pack” Heirloom Seed Exhibit at the Hort

Each year the Hudson Valley Seed Library commissions New York State artists to design the packaging for a special line of heirloom seeds called Art Packs. Until March 2, you can see the packs next to the original works–and buy both the seeds and reprints of the art–at the Horticultural Society of New York on West 37th Street. We’ve been making the rounds of winter farming conferences in the region–from NOFA to PASA–and we just got back from the most urban of these, Just Food’s 2012 conference at the High School of Food and Finance in Hell’s Kitchen, which included a job fair organized by Good Food Jobs and workshops advising on how to start a career as a farmer, raise money for your food startup, or launch your food-related nonprofit.
