Despite the noticeable lack of spring sunshine the past few days, we’re still super-excited to present part two in our video series on the making of a city rooftop mini-farm. Like the first (a sweet little number on starting seeds in Manhattan apartments) this one is made just for us by Joseph Schilling, who runs the Manhattan garden design firm Woodland Landscapes.

Also like the first, it’s as entertaining as it is educational, thanks to Schilling’s witty approach and Dylanesque folky garden song-craft. (You can learn more about Schilling’s project and his impressive resume right here.)

The five-part video series–look for the next three here as summer approaches–follows his work outfitting a rooftop garden for Brooklynites Jenny Lessard and Martin Nuñez, who is a co-owner of Brooklyn’s gourmet grocery chain Union Market. Schilling is turning the couple’s Boerum Hill rooftop into a mini-farm filled with vegetables, herbs and other edibles.

In this episode, Schilling transplants his “little girls” to their new home–with a close-up on his fennel–and helps Lessard and Nuñez map out their plan for both design and construction. One key requirement, according to Jenny: that her kids see the produce growing from their bedroom window.
